SAUDI ARABIA: Overseas Employees to be Phased Out of 12 Retail Sectors
Employers in 12 retail sectors are to be banned from having overseas staff on their payrolls in a three-phase process. Since 11 September, it has been illegal for non-Saudis to work in automobile, clothing, furniture or houseware retailing. As of 9 November, the same structure will apply to retailers focusing on electrical appliances/electronics, timepieces or optical goods, with outlets selling medical devices, construction material, auto-parts, carpets or confectionary affected from January 2019.
These new regulations form part of moves to reduce the local unemployment rate from its current level of 12.8% to 9% by 2020.
