Argentina Modifies Import Monitoring Procedures

Argentina has amended its import monitoring system (SIMI) by allowing importers to obtain an officialised SIMI declaration prior to the arrival of their goods in Argentina, rather than prior to the boarding of the goods. Certain additional provisions have also been rescinded in an effort to facilitate the import process. Under SIMI, Argentinean authorities conduct a systematic analysis of import declarations based on a risk assessment and/or an examination of the financial solvency of the importer that intends to carry out the operation. The importer is contacted electronically in instances where additional information is required. Declarations submitted through the SIMI system are valid for a period of 180 days from the date they are cleared by all relevant agencies.
