MYANMAR: National Rollout of Online Customs System Postponed Until 2018

Teething troubles with the country’s new online customs clearance system means its national rollout is now likely to be postponed until 2018. The system – the Myanmar Automated Cargo Clearance System or MACCS - has been in use in Yangon since November 2016 and has sparked widespread protests over extended processing times.

At present, customs clearance at ports in Yangon is said to be taking between 15 and 20 days, while air freight is facing delays of between 12 and 15 days. Poorly trained staff and slow internet connections have been cited as the root causes of the current problems.

For further details see MYANMAR: Online Customs Clearance System Goes Live in Yangon as of 12 November.
