INDIA: 10% Customs Duty Imposed on Imported Mobile Phone Chargers and Adapters

Customs duty of 10% is now payable on all imported mobile phone chargers and adapters. The tax on such items was authorised as of July 14, following the amendment of a 2005 regulation that had erroneously granted them duty-free status following a misinterpretation of India’s obligations with regard to the World Trade Organisation’s Information Technology Agreement.

The move is also seen as a means of restricting such imports in order to boost the country’s nascent mobile phone charger and adapter manufacturing sector.
